Sewer Line Cleaning in Houston, TX

Open the main line from the house to the street cleanout, and find out what stopped it.

Sewer line cleaning in Houston clears the one pipe every fixture depends on, from the house out to the cleanout at the street. Roots, grease and wipes cause most main line stoppages. If toilets gurgle or several drains slow down together, stop running water and check that cleanout, because it tells you whether the blockage is yours or the City's.

Is the stoppage yours or the City's? Check the sewer cleanout

Check the street cleanout before anyone runs a cable. Houston Public Works uses the cleanout to mark the edge of its public collection system, so it is the fastest way to learn who owns the blockage.

  1. Stop using water in the house.
  2. Find the cleanout near the street and open it carefully, wearing gloves.
  3. If sewer water is standing there, report it through 311 by phone or online.
  4. If the cleanout is dry, the stoppage sits on your private line, and that is our kind of call.

Keep children and pets away from an open cleanout, and put the cap back when you finish.

What are the signs your main line needs cleaning?

A main line stoppage shows up at more than one fixture, usually the lowest ones first. On a Houston slab that often means a tub or shower. Watch for:

  • Tub or shower water rising when a toilet flushes
  • A toilet gurgling while the washer empties
  • Several drains slowing down in the same week
  • Sewage smell at a shower or laundry drain
  • Water or sewage at the cleanout

If sewage is already on the floor, go straight to emergency sewer backup steps. EPA warns that sewage backups in homes threaten public health as well as property.

How do tree roots in a sewer line get started?

Roots follow moisture to a loose joint or crack, then grow inside and spread into a mat. A City of Traverse City sewer guide says water vapor leaving the pipe draws them in, and that tree roots can range about 2.5 times the tree's height, farther in drought. Houston's long dry stretches give them a reason to go looking.

Clay makes this worse. The clay soils around Houston crack open in dry months, and pipe joints in older clay and cast iron lines move with the ground. Each small gap gives a root its way in.

The other two causes come from inside the house. EPA found oil and grease to be the most common cause of line blockages in a case study, with roots second. Houston Public Works says the same about grease here and adds wipes to the list.

How is a main line stoppage diagnosed?

We start at the cleanout and read what the line tells us. Water level in the cleanout shows which side of it the stoppage sits on. Then the cable's feel and what it brings back tell us whether we are dealing with roots, grease, paper or something harder. A cable that stops dead at the same depth each time may be hitting a collapse or an offset. In that case, more cutting is the wrong move.

A line that stops again within weeks of each cleaning may have lost its slope, and no cleaning restores that. EPA's guidance ranks pipes on shallow slopes high for maintenance, and Houston's flat ground leaves little fall to spare.

Once the line flows, a sewer camera inspection shows the pipe wall. This is the best time to run one, since standing sewage hides the problem.

Rooter service, sewer snake or jetter: which clears the line?

Pick the tool by what is in the pipe. EPA describes rodding blades that break up grease, cut roots and loosen debris, and jetting that directs high-velocity water at the pipe wall. It also notes that rodding loosens sand and grit without carrying them out.

Method Works best on Trade-off
Sewer snake with cutter (rooter service) Roots, paper, wipes Opens a path, leaves some residue on the wall
Hydro jetting Grease, sludge, fine roots Needs a sound pipe, more setup
Root treatment after cleaning Slowing regrowth in sound pipe No help for the defect that lets roots in
Sewer line repair Broken joints and pipe A larger job, and the only cure for the entry point

A toothed cutter on a sewer cable shaves roots and opens the line.

Sewer line cleaning in Houston: how a visit runs

A visit moves from the cleanout, down the line, and back to a flow test:

  1. Call and tell us which fixtures are affected and when it started.
  2. We check the cleanout and confirm the stoppage is on the private side.
  3. We explain the method we suggest and put a clear, upfront quote in front of you.
  4. We clear the main line out to the street cleanout.
  5. We run water through the house to confirm the flow.
  6. We show you what came out and suggest a camera if the cause is unclear.

What main line cleaning covers

The job covers the one pipe every fixture drains into, from the house to the street cleanout. Branch drains get a separate look if they stay slow once the main is open.

Access decides how the cable gets in. A cleanout near the street or beside the house is the cleanest route. With no outdoor cleanout, the usual options are a pulled toilet or a roof vent, and each one adds setup. When the cable comes back out, whatever clings to the cutter is the first evidence of the cause.

  • A cleanout check
  • Main line cleaning from the house out to the street cleanout
  • A flow test at several fixtures
  • A plain account of what stopped the line

Work stops at the limit of your private line. Houston Public Works handles public pipes, so we will tell you if the trouble looks like it sits past that point. Cleaning restores flow, and it does not close a crack. A line with roots at a joint will need the same work again until that joint is repaired, so the visit ends with a plain word on what the pipe needs next.

Who may clean a sewer, and when does a cleanout need a permit?

No cleanout, or only a roof vent to work from? State law allows a drain cleaner, working under a responsible master plumber, to install a cleanout, and a new one makes every later cleaning easier. A restricted registrant may clear lines only through an existing code-approved opening. The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners administers those rules. Ask your plumber about the Houston Permitting Center's requirements for that work, or your own city's permit office outside Houston. Texas treats upkeep of drain piping as plumbing work, so request the license number covering the job.

What sets the price, and how do you slow the next stoppage?

Access and the cause set the price. We look at the job first and quote from what we find. The main factors:

  • Cleanout: an easy one outdoors, or access through a toilet or roof vent
  • Length: how far the stoppage sits from the access point
  • Cause: paper and wipes, grease, or a heavy root mass
  • Repeat work: whether a camera run follows the cleaning

This Old House lists camera inspections at $100 to $500 nationally, as updated March 30, 2026. That national figure is not a PipeElectric price. A flooded cleanout or heavy root mass takes longer than a paper clog at the same distance. A pulled toilet adds steps at both ends of the job, since it has to go back on a new seal. A long setback from the street adds cable. Ask whether a quote runs out to the street cleanout or stops at the first clear point.

To stretch the time between cleanings, stop grease at the kitchen and wipes at the toilet, and plant large trees well away from the known path of the line. If the line has roots, set a cleaning schedule based on what the camera shows, and do not wait for the next backup.

Sewer Line Cleaning around Houston

  • Bellaire · Rebuilds since the 1990s on postwar lots can still drain through an older private line.
  • South Houston · Berry Bayou backwater is a storm-sewer issue, so a private stoppage still needs a cleanout check.
  • Galena Park · Hunting Bayou tailwater surcharges storm sewers, so check the cleanout before blaming rain.
  • Spring Valley Village · The village keeps an after-hours water and sewer line for stoppages on the public side.
  • Jacinto City · The city runs its own wastewater plant, so public-side stoppages go to its Public Works.
  • Kingwood · Livable Forest lots put pine and water oak roots near sewer joints from the 1970s on.
  • Webster · Only 15% of homes are detached, so one main line can stop a whole apartment building.
  • League City · Oaks as large as the Butler Oaks on Main Street show how far local roots can reach.

Sewer Line Cleaning questions

How do I find my sewer cleanout?

Look near the street first. Houston Public Works describes it as white plastic pipe with a threaded or pull-off cap, sometimes under a metal cover. Grass and mulch can hide one, so walk the front of the lot with care. Older homes may have one against the house instead, or none at all, and that can affect access.

Can roots grow back after a sewer line cleaning?

Yes. A cutter removes the roots inside the pipe, but the joint or crack they came through stays open, so they keep returning. Regular cleaning controls them. A City of Traverse City guide also warns that roots range farther in drought, which fits Houston's dry summers. A repair at the entry point is the lasting answer.

Should I use root killer in my sewer line?

Yes, on a sound pipe, but read the label and treat it as control only. EPA's sewer cleaning fact sheet reports that chemical root treatment lasts about two to five years in municipal lines, longer than rodding alone. It does nothing for a broken joint, so scope the line before you pay for one.

Why did my sewer back up right after a heavy rain?

Rain can overload sewers through defects that let storm and groundwater in, according to EPA. Houston's own program targets areas with repeat overflows during rainfall. So check the street cleanout. Sewer water standing there during a storm points toward the public side, and a 311 report is the right first step.

How long does main line cleaning last?

It depends on what stopped the line. A one-time wipe clog may never return. Roots usually come back on their own timeline, and grease returns if the habits behind it stay the same. A camera run after cleaning gives a better answer than any general rule, because it shows the condition of the pipe.

Can a sewer snake hit a gas line?

Yes, though it is rare. A 2014 federal pipeline safety analysis flagged it: some gas lines were drilled through sewer laterals nobody had marked, and cutters later struck them. Tell your plumber about recent gas or fiber work on your street. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 and your gas utility from outside.
