Water heater installation in Houston is more than a swap. The job covers the right size and fuel, the gas or electric connection, venting, the pan and relief piping, and a City inspection inside Houston limits. Start by checking your current unit's fuel, gallons and location, because those three details shape every option.

Gas, electric, heat pump or tankless: which new water heater fits?

Stay with the fuel you have unless there is a clear reason to change it. A same-fuel replacement keeps the existing gas line or circuit, and that is usually the simplest project. These are the main options:

Type Works best when Watch for
Gas tank The house already has gas and a vent Vent condition, garage ignition height
Electric tank No gas service, or no vent path Slower recovery than gas
Heat pump tank A roomy garage, with electric service Size, airflow, condensate drain
Tankless You can upgrade gas, venting and scale care See the tankless water heaters page

Most storage water heaters last 10 to 15 years, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, though Houston plumbers report 8 to 12 here. Heat pump units can be two to three times as efficient as conventional electric tanks, the Department says, but they need more space and planning.

ENERGY STAR asks for about 1,000 cubic feet of air around a heat pump unit, in a space that stays between 40°F and 90°F year-round. NOAA normals show roughly 102 days a year reaching 90°F or more here, so that limit needs a hard look. A Department of Energy code brief is looser, putting the usual range near 45°F to 110°F and saying garages work well in warm climates. The maker's limit decides.

Is a 50 gallon water heater the right size?

Size your tank to the busiest hour of the day, not the number of bathrooms. Every tank carries a first-hour rating, which tells you how much hot water it delivers in one hour starting full. That number beats the gallon figure on the side.

Work it out this way:

  • Count showers, tub fills, laundry and dishwasher loads in your busiest hour
  • Remember a shower runs near 2.5 gallons a minute, mixed with cold
  • Compare the total with the first-hour rating of each model
  • Add margin if teenagers or guests stretch the morning

A household of one or two often does fine with 40 gallons. Larger families and garden tubs push toward a 50 gallon water heater or more. Gas tanks generally recover faster than electric tanks of the same size, so an electric upgrade may call for more gallons.

Fit comes next. A taller, wider tank may not clear a closet door or an attic hatch, and the stand, pan and vent all have to work at the new height.

A 50 gallon tank is taller and wider than many 40 gallon units, so closets and doors get measured first.

Does water heater replacement need a permit in Houston?

Yes, and it is the City's rule. The Houston Permitting Center requires a plumbing permit with inspection for replacing or installing a water heater, and a master plumber registered with the City has to pull it. Ask who pulls it before you sign anything, and look for it on the quote.

Buying at a store does not change this. Texas lets appliance dealers connect appliances without a plumbing license, but Occupations Code 1301.053 leaves water heaters out.

Inspection matters because this is gas, pressure and flue work in your house. The City of Houston follows the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code with local amendments, per the Permitting Center, and plumbers statewide hold licenses from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Outside Houston, Occupations Code 1301.551 requires cities of more than 5,000 to regulate water heaters too, so Katy, Pearland and others run separate offices. Check there.

Garage gas units get an extra look. A Department of Energy guide, citing the Uniform Plumbing Code, places burners and ignition 18 inches above a garage floor. Sugar Land's City FAQ gives the reason: flammable vapors sink.

How does a water heater installation in Houston work?

An installation moves through six steps, and the plan is set before the old tank comes out:

  1. Share the current unit's fuel, gallons and location by phone.
  2. We look at the space, gas or power supply, vent and drain.
  3. You choose a type and size, and get a clear, upfront quote.
  4. We shut off the water and fuel, drain the old tank and remove it.
  5. We set the new heater and connect water, fuel, vent and relief piping.
  6. We fill it, test for leaks, set the temperature and walk you through the shut-offs.

Timing depends on access, code work and inspection scheduling, so ask for the schedule with your quote. A same-fuel swap in an open garage is the shortest version of this job.

What the installation includes

A new install replaces more than the tank. The quote should cover the connections at the unit, the vent, the pan and its drain line, the relief piping, and removal of the old heater. A bigger unit can sit higher or wider than the last one, and anything beyond the unit, such as a longer gas run or a new 240-volt circuit, should be called out separately.

Every install ends with the same checks. The gas connection gets a leak test at each joint, the vent gets checked for slope and draft, and the tank is filled and purged of air before the burner or elements come on. An electric tank has to be full before power goes on, because a dry element burns out.

Heat pump models add their own list. The same code brief cites a 240-volt, 30-amp supply on most units, a route for condensate to a drain, and at least 6 inches of side and top clearance. It calls a small closet unsuitable without a louvered door. The circuit itself is electrical work, so plan for that trade.

This work includes:

  • Sizing and fit check for the new tank
  • Removal of the old heater
  • Water, gas or electric connection at the unit
  • Vent, pan and relief piping checks
  • Leak and operation tests
  • A walkthrough of what was installed

Vent size, slope and clearances are checked on every gas replacement, because a new tank can differ from the old one.

What goes into water heater cost?

Water heater cost starts with the unit, then rises with whatever the old install did not get right. Houston installer price guides from 2026 put a standard gas tank at $1,800 to $2,600 installed. That is a market range, not our price. We quote your job after a look at it.

These items move the number most:

  • Fuel and type: gas, electric, heat pump
  • Size: 40 gallon, 50 gallon or larger, and first-hour rating
  • Location: attic and closet work takes more labor than a garage
  • Venting: a new tank can need vent changes
  • Code items: pan, drain line, relief piping, expansion control
  • Permit and inspection: confirm the fee on the quote

Location is the quiet cost. An attic install means lifting the new tank through a hatch, running a pan drain and working in the heat, while a garage unit needs its ignition height checked. A gas-to-electric change needs a 240-volt circuit from an electrician, and electric-to-gas needs a gas line and a vent route, so both run past a like-for-like swap. Older homes can also need vent or pan work the last tank never had.

When you compare quotes, check that each covers the same list: old tank removal, pan, expansion control, vent work and the permit.

Rebates and tax credits worth checking first

Do not count on a federal credit. Section 25C ended after December 31, 2025. Texas SECO reported the state HOMES and HEAR programs had not launched as of August 21, 2026. For any utility offer, confirm current Texas terms with CenterPoint before you buy, because published figures do not always apply here.

How do you care for a new tank?

Good habits start the day it goes in. Keep the thermostat at 120°F, which the Department of Energy considers safe for most people. Every three months, pull a quart off the drain valve as the manual directs, which clears sediment. Have the anode rod inspected after a few years, sooner if you use softened water. Keep boxes away from the unit, and test your shut-off valve once a year. The water heater repair page lists the warning signs. In hard water, a water softener can cut the scale reaching the tank.

Water Heater Installation around Houston

  • Aldine · Part of Aldine sits inside Houston and part does not, so the address decides the permit.
  • West University Place · West U's permit form cites the 2021 IPC, not Houston's UPC, so check its rules first.
  • Spring Valley Village · The city takes its own Plumbing Permit Application, so a Houston permit does not cover this address.
  • Deer Park · Deer Park's permit list names water heaters, and its inspection stages include a separate gas test.
  • Sugar Land · The City's FAQ explains the 18-inch garage rule: ignition sources stay above flammable floor vapors.
  • League City · League City's Building Department requires permits for both water heater replacement and gas reconnection.
  • Katy · Forty percent of Katy homes date from 2010 on, so first tanks are reaching the reported 8-12 years.
  • Missouri City · Homeowners may pull some permits here, including heater replacement, through Development Services on Texas Parkway.
  • Friendswood · After Clear Creek flooding, replacing a flood-reached heater falls under the city's flood repair permit process.

Water Heater Installation questions

Does a water heater replacement need a permit in Houston?

Yes, inside city limits. The Houston Permitting Center requires a plumbing permit with inspection for a water heater replacement, and a registered master plumber must pull it. No plan review is needed at a single-family home, according to the City. Ask who pulls it, and confirm the fee on the quote. Suburbs run their own permit offices.

What size water heater does a family of four need?

Many families of four land on 40 or 50 gallons, but the better measure is your busiest hour. Compare that hour's hot water use with the first-hour rating on the label. Two showers plus laundry back to back push toward the larger tank. Tile tubs and big shower heads push it further.

How much does a new water heater cost in Houston?

Recent Houston installer price guides put a standard gas tank at $1,800 to $2,600 installed in 2026. Those are market figures, not our quote. Your number depends on fuel, size, location, and any venting or code work. We look at the job first, then give you a clear, upfront price.

Can I switch from gas to electric, or electric to gas?

Yes, but the connection changes the job. Going to electric needs a 240-volt circuit with room in the panel, which is electrical work. Going to gas needs a gas line and a vent path. Electric-to-gas also adds a gas permit question, so ask about it at quote time.

Is the Section 25C tax credit still available for water heaters?

No. The federal Section 25C credit ended after December 31, 2025, so a water heater installed now does not qualify. Do not plan your budget around it. If a seller mentions a rebate, confirm current Texas terms directly with CenterPoint Energy, because amounts and eligibility can change between territories.

How long does a water heater installation take?

It depends on how much changes. A same-fuel swap in an open garage is the simplest job. Attic units, new venting, or a change of fuel take longer. Inside Houston limits the inspection adds a step after the install. Ask for the schedule along with the quote, so you know what to expect.
