Plumbing in Jacinto City, TX is mostly a story of age. PipeElectric covers this city, about 9 miles from downtown Houston via I-10. Much of it was built up fast after Frank Sharp laid out a subdivision in 1941. The whole city is under 2 square miles, so one era of pipe runs through almost every block. The city has been replacing its old water lines, but that work does not reach the pipe inside your house.

Jacinto City is ZIP 77029, tucked east of the I-10 and East Loop interchange beside Galena Park, with US-90 close by. Its name comes from the nearby San Jacinto battleground. Call during business hours and tell us how old the house is.

Frank Sharp's 1941 subdivision and the pipe it left behind

This was not a postwar suburb, as it is often described. It started during the war. Developer Frank Sharp opened the subdivision in 1941, and it filled with shipyard workers and people from nearby steel mills and war plants. The city incorporated in 1947 with nearly 3,800 residents, then reached 6,856 by 1950 and 9,547 by 1960.

That compressed timeline matters for your plumbing. It means much of Jacinto City's housing is the same age, so the same failures show up across the city:

What was common then What it does now
Steel supply lines Narrow from inside, drop pressure, leak at joints
Cast iron or clay sewer pipe Scales up, cracks or separates at joints
Original shut-off valves Stick or weep when finally turned

The public side has been getting attention. In 2021 the city called parts of its water system at least 75 years old and short on pressure, and in 2023 its Public Works director said about 40 percent of the old water lines were done. Most of the sewer system was rehabilitated by pipe bursting.

These homes have also had decades of clay movement under them. Our article on signs of a hidden water leak covers what to look for before the damage shows.

Hunting Bayou, Turkey Run Gulley and the storm water that follows

Hunting Bayou is what residents watch. Near the southern city limit it turns east past Pyburn Elementary and winds through about a dozen direction changes, forming an oxbow. Local reporting in 2018 said that wooded stretch had no known channel improvements and collected debris, and the city manager proposed a diversion for the bayou and Turkey Run Gulley. Earlier, a collapsed concrete liner near Holland Avenue blocked the main drainage channel from late 2014 until it was repaired in 2016.

Storm water and sewers are separate systems, but they meet in bad weather. When the ground is soaked, water gets into old cracked sewer pipe and slows everything. If your drains only act up in storms, that is a clue to share with us.

Setting up a Jacinto City visit from Houston

Scheduling takes one call: 7 AM until 8 PM from Sunday to Thursday, 7 AM until 6 PM on Friday, no Saturday hours.

A plumber checks the problem at the house and explains what is failing and why. A clear, upfront quote follows, and nothing proceeds until you approve it. Older valves can be stuck, so if you can show us your main shut-off valve first, that helps.

Plumbing questions from Jacinto City

How old are most Jacinto City homes?

Most of the city grew between the early 1940s and 1960. Frank Sharp's subdivision opened in 1941, the city incorporated in 1947, and the population reached 9,547 by 1960. It has stayed close to that level since, with 9,613 in 2020. Expect original pipe unless a past owner replaced it.

How do I use the Jacinto City water meter app to find a leak?

The city website points customers to the EyeOnWater app for its newer meters. Check your use in the middle of the night, when nothing should be running. If the reading never hits zero, you likely have a leak, so note the pattern and call us with it.

Where do I get a plumbing permit in Jacinto City?

The city's forms page lists a Plumbing Permit application and a Plumber's Registration form. City Hall is at 1301 Mercury Drive, phone 713-674-8424, weekdays from 8 to 5. Public Works is at 12202 Market Street, 713-453-7411. Ask City Hall what your repair requires.

Does Hunting Bayou cause sewer problems in Jacinto City?

It can add pressure in a big storm. Local reporting describes a winding oxbow near the southern city limit that traps debris. High water can slow drainage, and old cracked sewer pipe can let storm water in. If drains only act up in heavy rain, get the line checked with a camera.
