Plumbing in Galena Park, TX has a problem you rarely see elsewhere in Houston's inner ring: rust-colored water tied to local groundwater. PipeElectric covers Galena Park, about 8 miles from downtown Houston via I-10 and Clinton Drive. The city sits about 7 feet above sea level on the north bank of the Houston Ship Channel and draws on wells of its own.

Galena Park is ZIP 77547, between the 610 Loop and the Port of Houston, next to Jacinto City and Houston's Clinton Park. Clinton Drive is the main road through town, and it carries a lot of port traffic.

Rusty water, Stewart Street wells and a town older than its name

Galena Park's water has a character of its own. The 2025 city report lists two groundwater sources, at 304 Stewart and 1900 Keene Street, plus surface water bought from the City of Houston. The Water Department says rusty water comes from iron and manganese in the region's groundwater. It is not harmful, but it can stain clothes and fixtures, and sediment can settle inside your heater. City staff test chlorine daily, but a chemical analysis of your own tap is a private lab job at your expense.

Start with the right call. If the rusty water hits every tap at once, report it to the Water Department at 713-672-2556 so a worker can investigate and flush mains if that is the cause. If only the hot side runs rusty, the likely trouble is in your tank.

The houses have their own history. The settlement began as Clinton in 1835, became a rail center along the new port in the 1880s, turned to refining in the early 1900s and took its name from a refinery company at incorporation in 1935. Expect a mix of older houses with repairs layered over many years.

Seven feet above sea level: Hunting Bayou and storm water

At 7 feet of elevation, this city has very little fall for water to drain. Hunting Bayou reaches the Ship Channel near Galena Park. Houston Public Works says that in larger storms, storm sewers along the bayou can back up from its tailwater, and structures along the full length of the bayou can flood.

Here is what that means inside a house:

  • Toilets and tubs may drain slowly during a big storm, even with nothing wrong in your pipes
  • Repeat trouble during normal rain suggests a problem in your own line
  • A sewer backup is a health issue, so stop using water and stay away from it

After Harvey, authorities also looked into a gasoline spill from two tanks damaged by floodwater. Treat any floodwater here as contaminated.

Booking a Galena Park visit from across the 610 Loop

Your first step is a phone call. Try any day but Saturday from 7 AM. Friday ends at 6 PM and other days at 8 PM. Tell us whether the Water Department has already been out, since that saves time.

Expect a plain answer on what is failing, and a clear, upfront quote ahead of any replacement.

Clinton Drive, City Hall and the Port of Houston

  • City Hall: 2000 Clinton Drive, main line 713-672-2556
  • Permits and Inspections: extension 301, with applications for plumbing permits and contractor registration
  • Water and Wastewater: same phone, and the city posts its annual water report online
  • Nearby: the Port of Houston, the Houston Ship Channel and Clinton Park

Freight rail and heavy industry surround the town, so have buried lines located before any yard digging.

Know where the city's pipe stops. The Water Department maintains the service line from the main to the gasket on the customer's side of the meter, and a leak past that is the owner's. For a leak indoors, close the private shutoff where the pipe enters the building. If you cannot, call 713-672-2556 and ask for an emergency disconnect. Leave the meter valve alone, because the city warns it is hard to turn and can break.

Plumbing questions from Galena Park

Why is my Galena Park water rusty?

The city's Water Department says rusty water comes from high iron and manganese, found in most groundwater in this part of Texas. These minerals are not harmful, but they can stain laundry and fixtures. Report it at 713-672-2556 so the city can check and flush mains if needed.

If rusty water is the city's issue, when should I call a plumber?

Call when the city has checked its mains and the color stays, or when rusty water shows up only on the hot side. That points to your water heater or house piping. A plumber can flush the tank, inspect the anode and test whether a filter makes sense for your home.

How do I get a plumbing permit in Galena Park?

Galena Park's Permits and Inspections Department offers a plumbing permit application and contractor registration. Reach it at (713) 672-2556, extension 301, or by email through the city website. City Hall is at 2000 Clinton Drive. Ask what your job needs before work starts, because the page lists no plumbing specifics.

What should I check after high water near Hunting Bayou?

Check the gas water heater, sewer line and any outside cleanouts. Do not relight a heater that sat in water. Harvey floodwater here also came with a gasoline spill from damaged storage tanks, so treat floodwater as contaminated and clean affected fixtures before normal use.
